Sea Turtle Monitoring
Now Available! The Loreto Guide Association has received
authorization for just a few local companies to be involved
in a Sea Turtle Monitoring project in the Marine Sanctuary.
Each month we will offer one or two special tours which include
capturing, registering important data, and releasing specimens
of turtle populations. The groups will be accompanied by
authorized crew and will be able to learn the details of
setting capture nets, turtle biology, and marine conservation
ethics. Paddling South is one of the few Loreto companies
involved in the monitoring efforts.
Sea turtles have traversed the world's oceans since before the
dinosaurs roamed the earth. Five of the world's seven marine turtle
species can be found off the coast of the Baja California peninsula.
All are endangered. Learn about turtle biology and the people who
are trying to save these magnificent animals.
SEA TURTLE MONITORING
Loreto National Marine Park
Participate in our brand new Sea Turtle Monitoring & Sustainable
Tourism program. The three main goals of this project are, to:
- Educate visitors and regular users of the Marine Park on the importance of protecting our natural resources.
- Provide scientific data for the "Sea Turtle Monitoring Project."
- Present a fun and interactive model of Sustainable Tourism which supports conservation and science.
Camp for 24 hours on a beautiful beach surrounded by the coastal
desert of Baja, or join a 12+ hour daytime tour. We provide camping
gear, food, guides, transportation and outdoor education about the
environment. We may also incorporate the monitoring activity into
one of our scheduled week-long tours.
Participate in catching sea turtles; weighing, measuring, tagging and
releasing them. You will be able to help name a turtle, and receive
future information on the turtle(s).
